Cassava Farming
Business
Cassava farming
is a very lucrative business now in Nigeria especially now that the government is ready and investing lot of monies into the agric sector. Quite a lot of
youths are now going into agriculture. Cassava is a very valuable product here
in Nigeria as Nigeria is the second highest consumer of cassava products.
One of the major
things I will stress here which I think is the most important part of the whole
equation is the Land factor. The larger
the field, the greater the profit. This is very simple because you won’t do
many work, yours is just to gather knowledge and give directives with little spending here and there.
My father has a
big farm and he works only when he chooses. The most important thing is to know
of the best ie healthy cassava stem to use and also to understand the timing
for weeding etc.
Lets Begin the process
1.
Get Your Field – To me this is the most cost
experience factor you must consider. Land are relatively cheaper in rural areas, which can
also be leased. A lot of us have large plots of land wasting in the village,
which can be used for farming. If you go to states like Ogun, Ebonyi which have
a fertile land for agriculture, land can be leased to you for about N 5000 per hecter.
2.
Join The Cassava growers Association – this step is very important. The major
benefit you would get from cultivating cassava would be as a result of joining
the association. Government is releasing serious money to agriculture
especially to cassava.
Joining the cassava
growers association in your location would grant you or make you eligible to
enjoy government grants.
Now you need have
hectares of land before you will be given any loan or grant. Therefore the
bigger the land you have, the better for you. Because success in cassava
farming comes as a result of doing it in a commercial, mechanized scale and not
in the subsistent manner we use in rural areas in Nigeria.
3. Get
Knowledge About It
– Getting knowledge about all you need to do and to know it not difficult as
other members of the association are experienced and are willing to let you
know what you need to know. Buyers are not a problem. You connect with buyers,
some of who are exporters in the cassava growers association.
If you need
government support which I think is the major advantage of this business, you
would have to follow due process, which is not difficult.
This
loan is a non collateral loan – The government may only need to be sure that
you are working with the money given to you.
Technical
Assistance will be provided for you like, the use of plugh, tractor,
harvester etc will be given to you, aid deducted from the loan.
In
some cases, hectares of land will be leased to you from the loan.
There
are ready buyers of cassava waiting.
Getting Registered
When registered, you will have to register with N 5, 000. The money was paid in the bank
and teller was brought to the office.

As a member of
the association, you have free access to cassava stems.
Government is
monitoring them seriously as the loan money would not be handed over to farmers
in raw cash but equipment will be given in equivalent to the cash. Therefore,
if you are not interested in agriculture, don’t even apply thinking you can
collect the loan in cash and escape.
When you join
the Association, you will be informed about how to go about everything. cheers
